Classification of Bellows Compensators:Axial-type bellows compensators—mainly include internal-pressure bellows compensators, external-pressure bellows compensators, double-effect bellows compensators, unconstrained bellows compensators, and directly buried bellows compensators.Lateral-type bellows compensators—include large-stroke lateral bellows compensators and small-stroke lateral bellows compensators.
A bellows compensator is a type of compensation element. It utilizes the elastic deformation of its main component—the bellows—to absorb dimensional changes in pipelines, conduits, vessels, and other structures caused by thermal expansion and contraction, or to compensate for axial, lateral, and angular displacements in these components. It can also be used to reduce noise and vibration. It finds extensive applications in modern industry.

Specifically, compensators can compensate for axial, lateral, and angular movements. They feature characteristics such as zero thrust, simplified support structure design, corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, and noise reduction with vibration damping. They are particularly well-suited for hot-air ducts and flue gas/dust pipelines. The working principle of bellows compensators is that they utilize the effective elastic deformation of the flexible element in the bellows to absorb dimensional changes in pipelines, conduits, or vessels caused by thermal expansion and contraction, making them a type of compensation component.
It can absorb axial, lateral, and angular displacements. Before installation, the compensator device and its usage requirements must be carefully checked to ensure that its model, specifications, and pipeline configuration meet the design requirements. For compensators equipped with an inner sleeve, attention should be paid to ensuring that the direction of the inner sleeve is consistent with the flow direction of the medium. For hinged compensators, the plane of hinge rotation must align with the plane of displacement movement.
For compensators requiring “cold tightening,” the auxiliary components used for pre-deformation may only be removed after the piping system has been fully installed. It is strictly prohibited to use the deformation of bellows compensators as a means of adjusting installation deviations in pipelines, as this could impair the compensator’s normal function, reduce its service life, and increase the loads on the piping system, equipment, and supporting structures.
